To the Cousin Russ community:
To the Cousin Russ community:
I want to share this blog post by DearMYRTLE . I totally agree with her Call to Action.
A very dear friend of mine's mother walked the "Trail of Tears". I would be very interested in learning of how I would go about researching a Native American's family. Help her get her mothers story told. I am sure that her story is known within the family as story, but how can that story doesn't get told to the larger community. How does her story get put into the history classes that our children and grandchildren take.
Our own grandchildren have Native American ancestry. We took them to the Plimouth Plantation, but how would I go about doing some research to help connect their experience to the reality of the people who were being portrayed in Massachusetts. Or how do I research one of my ancestors who was probably miss represented in my family story as being a Native American.
We have or run into many [ you name it ] American traditions to explore and learn more about.
If I understand the dialog that has been presented in the DearMYRTLE blog, I look forward to the outcome.
If you, as a member of this community, are part of these other Genealogy Educational organizations, please help with this Call for Action
Thank you,
Russ

Received this from AncestryDNA
Received this from AncestryDNA
The time has come. This morning, we have launched our new, enhanced DNA matching and the beta for DNA Circles. It is okay to talk and post about it. A couple of quick updates:
All AncestryDNA customers who had their results prior to today will have their updated DNA matches available on the site. We are in the process of emailing everyone to notify them of the update.
·
DNA Circles is the name for what we previously shared as DNA match groups. This is being launched in beta as the technology is still in its early days. The help section of DNA Circles has lots of information on how this works, we’ll also be posting an overview for everyone to read.
You can download your “old" DNA matches via the settings tab on the DNA homepage. This is only available to people who had results prior to today. From today forward, people only have the “new” matching results.
What really makes our new matching algorithms powerful is how we have improved the process of phasing with having the database size to cross compare and take a deeper dive into the new discoveries we are making. Check out the white paper for more of the details. It’s available in the help area for DNA matches, click the question mark.
We are very excited to share this new feature and to see the discoveries that can be made. Send me any feedback you have for us. Blog post on Ancestry to come shortly.

I have started a community for my local genealogical society. I would like to add some files (not photos), but I am not sure how to. Would I need to save the file on Google Drive and then create a link back to the community? Do people need to request permission to view the files individually, or can I create a special folder with blanket permission?

Hey Cousin Russ, since you are a user of Evidentia, can I get yourinput on how you enter information?
Hey Cousin Russ, since you are a user of Evidentia, can I get your input on how you enter information? For the most part, I've been creating separate sources for each of my "finds". So when I have a census record, a FindAGrave entry, etc., I've enter each as it's own source, with a title of something like "Gravestone Photo - John Smith" or something like that. I do have one source for my personal artifacts and papers with multiple citations within. Is that how you have it set up? I can see how one could have a single source for something like the SSDI, with multiple citations under that for individuals, but the way I'm reading Evidence Explained, for FindAGrave items, I should put the year of access in the source citation, correct?
Thanks!
Michelle
Thanks!

I am getting to my earlier ancestors for the Nelson line.
I am getting to my earlier ancestors for the Nelson line., those before 1752 when the calendar changed. My question is how do I enter the correct date in my FTM program? I have it written on my index card as it is here. I believe I would enter this date as 26 Feb 1644. This does not change it to the Georgian calendar date, just leaves it that she was month on the 26th of Feb. Is this the best way to enter pre- 1752 dates?

Great news: MyCanvas finds a new home in Alexander’s
(Author: Eric Shoup)
This past June, we announced that we were retiring the MyCanvas website and service in September 2014.
We’ve heard from many people who love MyCanvas and hate the idea of it going away. Well, we have some good news for you: It’s not going away after all. We listened and decided not to retire MyCanvas, but instead transfer the website to Alexander’s.
Founded 35 years ago, Alexander’s is a Utah-based printing production company that has been the long-term printer of MyCanvas products including its genealogy books, calendars, and other printed products. This makes the transition of MyCanvas to Alexander’s a natural fit.
It’s our hope that this agreement will not change the experience for MyCanvas customers. In fact, Alexander’s plans to make some exciting improvements we think you’ll love. Additionally, MyCanvas will continue to be available from the Ancestry.com website as we believe in the importance of sharing family history discoveries and see MyCanvas as a way to deliver this ability to our customers.
The transition of MyCanvas will take about six months. But in the meantime, all MyCanvas projects will remain accessible on Ancestry.com until it moves over to Alexander’s next year. We will continue to communicate details as the transition moves forward.
We want to thank our loyal MyCanvas customers for all the projects you have built and printed with us over the years. We’re excited about this new owner of MyCanvas—and we think you will be too.

My system is Windows 7 Pro 64bit, FTM2014, workspace not sure. After selecting a person in the People view. Go to the Person tab. Select Facts from the from the view menu. Once there if you right click on a individual facts line, the context menu has an option to merge duplicate facts. This is fantastic. My question is, is there a faster/better/auto way to do this? Is there a merge all for facts lurking somewhere?

Hi Russ.
Hi Russ....I was watching the discussion in DearMyrtle's HOA from early last week when you guys went 24 hours during the indexing event about the ways that images and sources are attached in different database programs.
I am curious in FTM how you and others in the community use the Fact called "Census". When I merge a census record from Ancestry.com into my FTM database it usually creates different facts for the different pieces of information found in the census. So I end up with a fact for "Residence", "Birth", "Race", "Sex", etc rather than one for "Census".
What is the advantage to including the "Census" Fact?
I am using FTM 2014 on Windows 8.
Thank you!

Hi Russ
Hi Russ,
I'm entering a person in my file who was never married and had no children. I saw a blog post you did back in May 2010 about how to enter both the "never married" and "no descendants" information using FTM 2010. Is this method still the best way to handle it, or is there a "new & improved" way with FTM 2014?
Thanks,
Karen

Russ Worthington If I remember correctly you live in New Jersey. I would like to know how to find a researcher to look for a will/probate record in New Jersey (probably Trenton). Should I contact a Genealogy Society, a Historical Society or maybe I should even post this to a different community. Any advice? Thanks.

Question: Best practice gather information about a village or a city inFTM
Question: Best practice gather information about a village or a city in FTM
Have started to try out Evidentia and then you have something called subject which I understand can be a person, village or whatever you would like to gather information about.
If I e.g. find information about a house that more people live in. My understanding is that I in FTM create a fact Residency and that is connected to a person and I set the timeperiod that person lives in the house e.g.
Date 3 apr 1905 - 20 nov 1905
Location: Kräbäck, Österfärnebo, Sweden
If I have another person that lives in the same period I can link this fact to that person
I can also decide to append information about the village Kräbäck.... to this fact
But if I have people that live during a different timeperiod I need to create more facts and need to add information about Kräbäck to all persons fact....
Is that correct or do you have a better way of gather information about a village during a timeperiod.....

Hey Cousin Russ , when you use Evidentia to record information from acensus record, do you record a relationship...
Hey Cousin Russ , when you use Evidentia to record information from a census record, do you record a relationship claim between mother and child? For example, the census will often spell out the relationship of a child to the head of household (the father for example), but it doesn't really specify whether the mother listed is the birth mother of the child. I know in the 1930 census, it lists age of first marriage but that doesn't necessarily mean it was to that spouse. Thoughts?

Hi Russ.
Hi Russ. Thanks for pointing me to the video's about Hangouts. I've watched them and I'm still confused. I understand the big picture but I'm having trouble with specific functionality and I'm hoping you can help me. Let me explain my objectives and you can let me know if you can be my muse.
I am the First Vice-Regent of Roswell King DAR chapter, in Dunwoody, Georgia. Our chapter is unique in a several ways and I'm trying to make a more cohesive group. Our chapter meets on the third Tuesday of each month (except 3 months in the summer) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Our chapter is organized for working women. Part of our membership are retired working women, the other part of our membership consists of working women. My goal is to find a way to include both sides of working women. Our retired members are advanced in age and are mostly unavailable for meetings. Our working women wear many hats. Their schedules are packed between work and family. I believe HOA's will be an excellent way to bridge the gap between working and retired members.
To complicate matters, the women wanting to join our chapter are typically working professionals with limited time. Our chapter Registrar is stepping down after 8 years and we have no one as a capable replacement. I want to use HOA's as a way to communicate with our prospective members. As with any lineage society, there are specific guidelines on how to fill out the application. I want to be able to interact with one or more person's to guide them in the application process. Additionally, I need to provide an avenue whereby others in my chapter can help.
Is there any way you and I could talk real time so you could walk me through the process of actually doing a HOA? The video's provide some information but I'm missing a few key points. I'd really appreciate your time and instruction - and so would our chapter! Thanks -
Marsha

Best practice traveling to find location, places etc....
One reason I am fascinated about location based genealogy is my fascination of walking where my ancestors has been.
I have the last weeks done 3 tours and I have started to use a Spot device to track my trip every 20 minutes so that I afterwards can create a nice trip report with the route in it

The problem I feel as a newbie in geneaology is to prepare for the journey. How to do it in the best way?
I try to be exact in position of a fact if possible using GPS coordinates.
I have seen the possibility to create customized reports and filter on location which works but still it is difficult to find the places. I would like to have places of interest on a map...
As a "workaround" I have tested by hand to create customized Google maps and use my phone to find of what places is near me or how to navigate to a place and that is a way forward but I would like to have this automated....

BUT http://youtu.be/ElrY5ALsx1Y?t=15m28s here Crista Cowen is resolving conflicts and then she use Excel to compare evidence against each other. I like the way she works BUT she is doing it outside FTM which I feel is a weakness of the user interface of FTM?!?!?
My question is: Do you use other tools than FTM to resolve conflicts or to get an overview. I looked briefly on Evidentia http://evidentiasoftware.com/what-is-evidentia/ and that sounds as a good approach to not be people centric.
Question: Do you feel of any limits with FTM regarding resolving conflicts? Have you tested evidentia or any other tool and can they live together with FTM

Russ a question about locations and FTM.
Russ a question about locations and FTM. I feel that you are a big fan of using good locations in your family tree which I also are. Feels like beeing able to visit a house someone has lived in gives an additional dimension.
I have FTM 2014 and try to use locations in the best way. But I am not a big fan of the windows client as I feel the user interface sometimes make it faster to work using the ancester.com web interface....:
What I think I have seen is that if I upload a tree from windows version of FTM where I have resolved all the locations and then download this tree to a new client it feels that I loose the resolved status of names ==> If I have a name then it is ok but if I have a description added to it (like name when the fact took place, more detailed name etc....) then I loose that the "first part" of the location is resolved.......
Question: Have you seen this and do you have a workaround....
I have an example under the title FTM problem on page

Google Hangouts Update: Wider Thumbnail Image for YOU
2 min Video: When you are on the inside of a Hangout Video Call or a Hangout on Air (HOA), you will now see a wider version of your own thumbnail image in the filmstrip. But only your thumbnail and only on the Inside of the Hangout Interface.
This change just happened on the 19th of June, 2014.
Check out this quick 2 minute video that shows the inside of a HOA broadcast. It helps you understand why the thumbnail change matters and you'll also get a quick view of another update that just happened called "Pinning". We used to call the same function "Blue Boxing" but now that the box around the thumbnail image is white, we likely will start calling it "pinning".
I've got another video in the works to go into further detail on how pinning works for Hangouts and HOA (Hangouts on Air).

UPDATE on DDoS attack: (Saturday, June 21, 12pm ET) We are aware of some connectivity issues with the Mac version of Family Tree Maker and our team is actively addressing it.
We are also aware of problems with downloading GEDCOM files from Ancestry and Mundia, and our team is working on this as well.
MyCanvas, MyFamily, Rootsweb and the keying tool on AWAP are still not available. Unfortunately, we do not have an ETA on these, but will continue to post updates as they are made available.
As mentioned there will be some intermittent slowdowns and outages as we work through the recovery from the DDoS attack. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through these issues.

Practical, down-to-earth advice for family historians. It's all about sharing the latest info for finding documents providing evidence of those elusive ancestors.

Ancestry.com and FTM2014
Ancestry.com and FTM2014
18 June 2014 at 11:54 am Eastern
From the best that I can tell, Ancestry.com is still having issues. From what I can tell, FTM2014, specifically, and probably other versions are impacted. You will see, or at least I am seeing, that I have No Internet Connection.
The folks at Family Tree Maker are aware of this issue and are working on it.

A blog reader asked what should be linked to a record, such as a CensusRecord.
A blog reader asked what should be linked to a record, such as a Census Record. This short video will try to explain that a Media File, like a Census Record is linked to a Citation. I think of the Media file or image as supporting information for the Citation. That Citation is then linked to ALL of the Facts, or information that I gathered from that Citation.

As Myrt would say, get away from behind the podium. It would appear to be working with the live Demos. Actually it's real work not a Demo. Most of what I have shared in the HOA (Hangout On Air) format is on my working file.
