  4. Hi Russ,
I've been attaching the DNA Match Confirmed fact to my DNA matches in FTM 2017. Now is there a way to do a search or report to find all those people?
    Thanks!

    1. Michelle,

This may turn into a blog post, but in the mean time.

So, you have a FACT called "DNA Match Confirmed" ? Right

You can FILTER in Everyone with that has that Fact. Filter, Filter In, All Facts, Select that DNA Match Confirmed Fact, Any Data, Exits.

Any of my Filter In, Filter Out blog posts goes into more detail.

The key is that you created a FACT, so you can Filter On Facts

  5. Cousin Russ,
I am having issues with my blog posts on Blogger not showing up via a Google search. I've been researching this for the past week and can't figure out what the cause is. I've created a blog post to explain what is going on: https://heartlandgenealogy.blogspot.com/2019/02/why-not-indexed.html. If you or any of your community have any suggestions on how to fix this issue, I'd love to hear them!

You really need to upgrade to FTM2017 as you are missing many features, especially TreeSync now FamilySync.

Please go to familytreemaker.com support page and LiveChat. They should be able to get you updated quickly.

The answer is absolutely. In my blog, ftmuser.blogspot.com I have many examples. I put the Cemetery Name in the Place field, and use the Historical Place Name feature. (see blog)

  10. Cousin Russ -- you have stated several times that you use FTM 2019 on your PC; your laptop; and your MAC. You also recently blogged that you add "laptop" to you FTM 2019 file naming scheme.

My question is what process/procedure do you follow that would allow you work on your FTM file on your laptop, say when traveling, and then on your PC when you return home? Do you restore a laptop backup file to your PC and rename it? Curious as I am trying to work out a way to use FTM on both laptop and PC. Thanks. Ted.

Yes, Back Up from the Laptop and Restore to the Desktop. Rename the FILE on the Desktop to remove the "Laptop" part of the Filename

I may have to do a blog post on that.

      Hope that helps,

  11. Has anyone had a Sync problem resolved after installing the FTM 2019 update?

My situation is that a SYNC FAILED message appeared while trying to sync one of my trees in FTM 2017 several months ago and I've been putting off fixing it, while not updating that tree in either Ancestry or FTM. (I had asked FTM support if it was okay to install FTM 2019 while I still had the Sync problem and they said it was.)

Will upgrading to FTM2019 hurt anything ? No, but it's not a good thing to EXPECT an update or upgrade to resolve a problem.

So, That said, I have questions for you.

Do you Compact and Back Up your File BEFORE you Sync? (Compacting to 0.00%)

Once you have had a Sync issue, have you gone to Live Chat AFTER you send the Failed Sync Report from the Help Menu?

Also, It's important to read this Knowledge Base Article on the current situation with the Amber Sync Weather Report.

  13. I want to cite newspapers.com on FTM but when you "Save to Ancestry" on ancestry.com, it creates a new fact in FTM. How do you save the clipping from newspapers.com to FTM and cite the source without creating a new fact every time?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unknown,

I do not do that. I do a Web Merge, of the Newspaper.com article, using the Web Clipper, AND Save as a JPG or PDF file to my computer.

What Facts does ANCESTRY create that ends up in Family Tree Maker ?

      Russ

      Delete
    2. Did you ever get a reply to this? Attaching a Newspapers.com article to a person in Ancestry creates a separate Fact for that person in Ancestry, which in turn transfers to FTM.
As an example, I attached an article titled "Blue Earth Farmer Dies in Accident" to someone in my tree. It created a Fact in Ancestry with that title. After Syncing in FTM a Fact was created there with the same title.
The thing that really bugs me about this is when I want to print a report in FTM....say, a Family Group Sheet. When I am selecting which Facts I want to include on the report all of these individual stories that I've linked to people using Newspapers.com appears in my Fact list, which really clutters it up.

      Delete
    3. Kaye,

First, I do not work in my AMT. I do ALL merges in FTM2019, including Newspapers.com (both versions).

      What FACT does it Create?

It should ONLY add a Newspaper Citation to the Facts that you attach that Citation to.

The "Blue Earth Farmer Dies in Accident" should be the Title of the Article in the Citation.

YOU need to report this to Ancestry, if I understand the issue and your question.

FTM2019 is only providing what Ancestry gave you. Sounds like you have Clean Up to do, in FTM2019. Making that "Blue Earth Farmer Dies in Accident" a citation and linking that Citation to the Facts / Information you gathered from that Newspaper.com article.

      Russ

      Delete
    4. I understand what you're saying. And if that's the case (and I know that it is), then Ancestry is also behaving erroneously by creating multiple sources with the exact same name for many, MANY other kinds of records. As an example, I have 3 sources called "1900 United States Federal Census". Under the first source are 76 Citations the second source has 32 Citations and the third source has 3 Citations.
What the heck is a person supposed to do? They make it so easy for us to attach records to our trees, but they're incorrectly handling those sources that get attached to our trees. Am I right?

      Delete
    5. Kaye,

I have many Source Groups, 1900 Census. NONE are 1900 United States Federal Census, as I MOVE ALL Ancestry Citations / FTM2019 Generic Source Groups, to the Source Template Feature. But each of my 1900 Census Source Groups are then by State. Then Each State will have many Citations, which would be by County, using the Source Template. Then Each Citation, would be by Household, as defined by the Heading of the Census Record. Each of those Citations, will have Many Links to Facts.

What ANCESTRY does and wants, as you can see in your AMT, Each Line on a Census Record (or person within a household) will have their OWN Citation. One Citation, several Facts, per person.

I want ONE Citation, Many People (Household), Many Facts.

IF you were to download from Ancestry, you'll see the One Person, on Citation, several Facts, for that census record.

What is a person to do " Use the Source Template Feature.

Its a matter of understanding WHAT Ancestry is doing, forgetting the why, and develop a plan, yourself, as to how to handle it.

The first thing I do when I do a Web Merge, and I ALWAYS do a Web Merge, is to convert that Citation, into a Source Template. AND, craft the Citation to meet the EvidenceExplained as closely as possible.

  14. Cousin Russ- I spent all weekend adding records to my FTM2019 file (free Newspapers.com weekend) only to discover that I was not using my most current data file. Is there any way to merge the files to keep all of the changes from both data files? Or any way to recreate the changes made to one file to the other?

    ReplyDelete

    1. nm,

Yes, you can always Merge two files AFTER Backing both of them up.

Not what I would do, however.

I would Print the Change Log from the "wrong" file, then re-create the steps in the correct file.

I would copy the Links from your Citations, for those Records you Merged into the Wrong File, and use those links in the Web Search Workspace, from the correct Profile, and Redo your Web Merges.

Yes, that may sound like a lot of extra work, but that it what I would do. Reason: Looking at the same record a 2nd time, may present to you information that you didn't see the first time.

  15. Data Error Report - Clearing Errors

    Possible duplicate event: Residence
Once the Data Error Report is run, you can double click on the Name which takes you to the facts. You supposedly can make changes here by deleting the duplicate Residence fact, but this does not appear to take effect. ESC > takes you back to the Data Errors Report. If I Generate Report again, nothing has changed.
You must go to People > Person > to delete the duplicate Residence fact. Then Publish > and the potential Error is gone, but the Name and Birth Date is still on the report.

    Solution:

If there is no Potential Error, then I do not want a report generated with the name only. Change the Data Errors Report Options, uncheck > Include individuals without errors. Problem fixed.

    Issue #2

The individual has the same last name as his/her spouse.

When this is true, how can you resolve the error?

I had some examples to display, but they would not show up. Is there another way to send questions where I can show you detail so it is easier to follow?

Did you read m blog posts on the use of the Data Error Report ? I suggest that you do, as I have covered many of your questions before.

I'd be very careful wit the Residence Fact.

Have you considered using the Preferred Only feature in the Data Error Report, as I have blogged about ?

Yes, you can Edit the Profile from the Report.

Same Surname for Spouse? How do you enter Unknown Names ? I realize that you may have spouses with the same surname, as families may have intermarried. Is that your case, or are you just entering a married name for a female and not her maiden name.

  17. Hello,
Although I have been researching my family for quite a few years, I have only now begun to scrutinize the quality (or lack thereof) of my sources and my citations of them. My question is simple and basic, but important, I feel. FTM/Ancestry seems to lump censuses of a given year into sources only bearing the name of the year. To my way of thinking, I should have many sources for a given year; 1850 US Federal Census, Population Schedule, Pennsylvania, Lancaster County, Lancaster, ED# xxx, sheet# xxx (and so on) being one such source. Citations would then be made for each person of interest on that page. Is this line of thinking correct, or should there be one source for the 1850 US census with all the more specific descriptors in the citations? If so, what sweeping generalizations can I make for all of the 1850 US census data published by Ancestry? [Have I made any sense? Be kind, I'm just trying to put all the pieces together.]
    Thanks,
    --- Tom

  20. Dear Cousin Ross,
I've been syncing FTM with Ancestry for over 15 years. I currently use FTM 2019 on a PC. I'd like to finally understand why, sometimes, there are duplicate media files within my family tree's Media folder.

For example, for my "Torgerson" family tree, in the "Torgerson Media" folder there could be two identical photos with file names of "Frances Kraft and sisters" and "Frances Kraft and sisters(1)". (Minus the quotations, of course.)

I know how to delete the extra file(s) to fix the problem and I know how to determine which file(s) I can and can't delete by checking in FTM as to which file the media record is attached to.

However, what I don't know is what is causing this to happen? I'm sure it's something I'm doing, so can you enlighten me?

    1. Kaye,

Don't know why I hadn't answered this one.

First, The Sync did NOT cause this.

Each Family File that you have WILL have a Media Folder.

The (1) indicated that you are using the SAME FILENAME for a Media file twice. Actually, you may NOT see a (1), but a (2). Bottom Line, SAME Filename for the Media File.

Now, since you mention that the Media file is of Sisters, that may give a hint as to the Cause.

Where did you Add that Media File, In the AMT or in FTM2019 ? Are you using the SAME Media file for both sisters, using LINKS from that Media file to the two profiles? Using a Link from One Media File, to two Profiles would NOT have caused the (1) or (2).

I can not guess how you caused the (1), unless you used the SAME Media File, and used the ADD Media option for the 2nd sister. So when you ADDED that Media file to FTM2019, it added the (1).

If I have two people in an image, my filenaming convention would be to use TWO Filenames. So, one would be Frances Kraft and the next one would have the Sister's Name. Using the SAME Media file outside of FTM2019.

However, I noticed the source citation references only the initial person listed on Find-A-Grave website. Is it important to you to later import the Find-A-Grave source citation for each individual person too?

When creating a Find-A-Grave fact, using” Find-A-Grave, Compler” where you list the Find-A-Grave ID in the description field, do you link this source citation to any other facts (name, birth, death, burial)? Or is it just a stand-a-lone fact?

    1. Jimmy,

The Web Merge feature on the Find A Grave website will only bring in that Profile. (One Person)

The Ancestry Index for Find A Grave may include those other people, but only one person is merged from the Find A Grave website.

I do NOT create a Find A Grave ID Fact. I do create a Memorial Number. I Cite all Facts that are included in the Web Merge from the Find A Grave Website. The Memorial Number is only one of many Facts that may be included.

      Russ

    2. Thanks for your prompt reply. I think I was confused and tried to create a separate citation just for the Memorial Number. First, merge all persons from the Find A Grave Index as needed. Then change the Find A Grave citation to a template format (which might have multiple persons and facts). Next, add the Memorial Number as an additional fact and link it to the above citation.

I depend a lot on your videos and explanations. Screen shots are wonderful. I wish there were a way we could include those when we have a question, as it might be easier to explain our issues. I did notice that the August 29, 2018 video for “Genealogy Do Over (Go Over) Find A Grave – Photo Citations” does not have a link to play.

      Delete
    3. Jimmy,

The Merge ALL from the Find A Grave INDEX already works. Remembering that that Index is on Ancestry, NOT Find A Grave

Yes, if when you Merge, from the Find A Grave Index from Ancestry, I think it is best to Move that Citation to the Find A Grave (Cemetery Derivitive) Source Template. The Memorial Number should NOT be included in the Find A Grave Index from Ancestry. There is two links in the Citation screen, to the Index which will take you to the Find A Grave Website.

From THERE you would add the Memorial Number as a FACT (if you wish) it it would be part of the Find A Grave (Website) Source Group. That is a Different Source Group from the Index from Ancestry.

Remember that the Evidence Explained Citation does NOT include URLs to records, only to the Root of the Website.

I will not address generic information that you, the use, might include in your Citation.

You can always live comments on the specific Blog Post.

The Source Template you selected (and I use it as well), Each County will be a Source Group (Left Panel). The Citation Details, will then add the Next level of jurisdication.

One suggestion, that I have Blogged about, it so use the word County after the County Name. The Source Template doesn't do that, so just add County after the county name.

You WILL see the different in the Reference Note to see the difference in format.

2nd ICON to the right in Add Citation, to COPY the Citation from page 1, then go to the 2nd page and use the 4th Option in the first ICON, which will use the Citation from page 1 to page 2.

I have several examples on the BLOG on how to do this.

  44. Hi, I have been using FTM for many years and merged a number of files together from cousins so my tree now has 9,700 names. But the most recent merge file had a large number of duplicates and even triplicates suggesting there were loops between the files i.e. more than one connection? Anyway, there were about 1,500 of them and it took a while clean them out because the bulk method EDIT, FIND DUPLICATES misses quite a few (about 500). So the other method, one by one is needed. The file size dropped fom 400mb to 17mb which shows how bloated it was.

The most interesting discovery however was that someone at some stage must have double entered my wife's name, the second time mis-spelt. So FTM thought I had been married twice. (My wife of 40 years was quite surprised). I deleted the stray wife but FTM insisted on saying in reports that I had been married twice, second wife unknown. The only work around seems to be to reinsert the second wife with your first wife's name, then merge the two. Problem solved.

Another topic on FTM anomolies - trying to display my father's second marriage where he hooked up with his sister in law. Yes, a bit embarrassing but entirely legal! The only way to link these two in a tree is to manually put a line between them on the pdf, FTM refuses to do it for some reason. But to do that their text boxes need to be side by side, not in the default locations. The kind people there explained that you can drag the boxes whereever you want in preview stage which is helpful.

But the fact remains that you can't digitally create a marriage between two people previously married to other people. One the other hand maybe using the previous post's trickery it might be possible. Insert a duplicate of the second wife's name then merge the two? Worth a try.

  48. Obituaries may be found online from funeral homes, newspapers, and online archives such as Legacy.com. or tributearchive.com (and many others). The source may or may not include both the funeral home and newspaper where it was originally published. I want one source group citation called “Obituary” rather than lots of different newspaper or funeral home source groups.

    Source Group “Obituary”

Citation detail: Surname_FirstName_MiddleName (married last name 1) [therefore name will match to my FTM tree and will be easy to find], Funeral Home or Newspaper (City, State), date [date published]

Citation text: Name as listed in obituary, (birth year – death year), accessed date

Web address: URL where obit can be found.

Citation text: no check Web address: checked

Copy the obituary to a word document and save as a pdf. Then attach to the citation. Cousin Russ showed this in a recent post, but I cannot find it now. That was a great idea because it is not apparent how long this URL will be available. Also put a copy of the citation in the header of the word document before saving as a pdf.

1 – Give me any advice on my citation.
2 – If you have both the newspaper and the funeral home names, should you list both? Does one supersede the other?
3 – When going to Sources > Source Groups (Obituary), I noticed in the center of the page where the Source Citations are listed, it includes both the citation detail and the citation text, regardless if the box is checked. This probably ok, I just noticed it.

A time or two I've run into situations where months or even years after saving a census record for an individual, I'll bring up that image again to look at it, and it's a different image than what I originally save. (It may be a page or two before or after the page my ancestor was on.)
When I complained to Ancestry about it they said that it can happen when they re-index their records.
Personally, I find this unacceptable as a researcher would constantly have to re-check saved images to be sure they're still correct.

But to actually "know" that one or two individuals has a census record that is incorrect is virtually impossible to notice unless you were to check every single one. That's a lot of records considering how many times an ancestor is counted in a census! I just find it astounding that Ancestry allows this to happen. I am positive that many genealogists/family historians have no idea this is happening.

I would not have asked the questions if I could have found the answer. But a lot has been written, so I apologize if I have overlooked it somewhere.

Once this merge is done on two people, in this case the citation on Betty will show the name as Roy K Holsather in the Find A Grave citation. The URL will also take you to Roy but you do see Betty. The main questions: (1) Do you also go back and get a separate Find A Grave Index for Betty. (2) Do you do a separate Fact for each “Find A Grave ID”; Roy # 129495469 and Betty # 129495466. (3) A separate Find A Grave, Compiler source citation for Roy and Betty since they are different numbers, and (4) a separate URL since it would take you directly to Roy or Betty.

On a side note, when I see an obituary attached to a Find A Grave, I do a Obituary Fact and reference it in the description field as “See Find A Grave”. Then attach the Find A Grave, Compiler source. Probably not acceptable by EE standards but that may be the only place I find the obituary.

    1. Jimmy,

When you do a Web Merge, from an Ancestry Find A Grave Index Hint, there may be many Names, dates, places linked in that Web Merge. EACH FACT will have ONE Citation Linked to each Fact. At least that is how I do it.

Not sure what Link you are talking about, but I do NOT include the Web Address in the Citation window, as that is NOT the link called for in the Citation, Using the Source Template Feature.

BUT, if I use the Link, in the Web Address field, It sill take my to that Find A Grave Index screen, where you will find the other information, that you Merged. (Names, dates, and places). In this specific case, not all of the DATA will be seen in that window. So, if you did a screen capture of that Page, some of the DATA in the WEB Merge will NOT Appear. BUT if you look at that Index Record, you will see links to all of the data.

I had an issue with that earlier, when the Index first came out, but I accept all of the DATA from that Web Merge.

Here is the REASON: I do the 2nd Merge from the Find A Grave Website. So, in the end, I will have 2 Citations from most of the Facts in the Index Web Merge.

ALSO, the data in the Web Merge, from the NON-Focus Profile, will, most likely, also have a Find A Grave Index Hint.

The Find A Grave Memorial Number is usually not included in that WEB Merge. I do NOT include the Find A Grave Memorial from the Index Hint / Merge. I only include the Memorial Number from the Find A Grave Website.

I generally will do a bunch of Index Merges, then at a later date, do a bunch of Find A Grave Web Site Merges. The work flow, for me, is different in dealing with a Index HINT, and actually go to the Find A Grave Website.

      Delete
    2. To your 3 Questions:

      1) - Yes, each / both, should give me Hints, as well as other's who may appear in the Web Merge. I keep track of Ancestry Hints. How many or good and how many are bad. I do that to allow me to say that my Ancestry Hints about between 90 and 95% accurate.

IF that are 5 Profiles as a result of the ONE Index Hint, I should end up with 5 Index Hints.

      2) - NO. Each Profile should only have ONE Find A Grave Memorial # Fact. That is ONE reason why I only add that Fact, when I go to the Find A Grave Website. Yes, I have seen a couple of Profiles with multiple Memorial Pages. I try to report those "duplicates".

      3) - When the Find A Grave website was re-done, They offered a really good Citation, which fits into the Source Template very nicely.

I used to have a Compiler "database". You may have called it a 'Compiler source citation". "source citation" is not the best term. It looks and reads like ONE THING. In Family Tree Maker, and I think this is correct, it is TWO things. A Source and a Citation. Describe the Book (Source) and where in the book did you find what (Citation).

I no longer have a Source Group, listing the "Compiler". REASON: Find A Grave is the Complier and SOURCE of the Information. So Find A Grave is a Source Group.

When I made that Change (no longer have a "Compiler" Source Group, I created a Cemetery Source Group, I keep information about the Cemetery in this Database. Contact information, addresses, etc go into this database (Source Group, and Cemetery Citation).

IF I look at a Burial Fact, I may have many Citations.

EXAMPLE: from a Hint from a Parent, (Index Hint), the Web Merge has a Child and where they are buried. BUT there is NOT a Cemetery in that Merge, only the Location of the Cemetery. 1 Citation from the Index Hint from the Parent.

That Child has an Index Hint, the Web Merge INCLUDES the Cemetery. A 2nd Burial Fact, with that Hint Index Citation. (Ancestry, being the "Compiler" (of the index).

1 Burial Fact, Only Location, Ancestry Compiler (Source Group), Parent Hint

2 Burial Fact, Cemetery Name, and Location, Ancestry Compiler, "Child Hint".

Then, going to the Find A Grave Website, from that "child's hint", that SAME (2nd) Citation, would be linked to the Find A Grave Compiler Source Group, and the Find A Grave Citation.

That is then the 2nd Citation on that Burial FACT, which includes the Cemetery Name.

Then I add the Citation from the Cemetery Database (Source Group) with the details of the Cemetery.

      4) - Using the Web Merge feature, puts the Link to the Index, or Find A Grave Memorial in the Web Address Field. That Field is NOT part of any Citation, but is clickable from the Citation in the Sources Workspace or from a Citation for any Facts linked to the Citations.

Oh, and my Cemetery Database (really a Source Group) has the Link to the Cemetery on the Find A Grave website.

      Your Side Note:

      1) What is an "Obituary" ? A Fact or a Source ?

      2) As with ALL Citations, What am I looking at AND Where did I get it from?

I have NO Obituary FACTS !!! I have a bunch of Citations what refer to Obituaries.

IF there is an Obituary on the Find A Grave Website, I will put that in the ToDo List for that profile and try to go find that Obituary, so that I can find that documentation. Same with newspaper articles that someone may post.

Having said that, and I find that Obituary, I would have another Citation for that Burial Fact.

YOU need to figure out how you want to record the information in your database, I am only sharing how I handle the data relating to "Find A Grave".

I hope that helps, and I also think that I have covered all of this is previous blog posts. BUT, many of those blog posts may have changed out I deal with this subject over time. I know that I have made changes based on Features of Family Tree Maker, learning about Sources and Citations, and what my needs are.

      Hope that helps,

In this file, I have a couple of folk you resided in New York City. Forget about it, until I can search.

I'll do another blog post when I have the "rural" folk.

My 1940 Census citations have the SD and ED for those with RD# or RR# addresses. Many of the SD's have been the same for 1940 and 1950, which is a start.

But what I don't know, nor have I seen, is how will those 1940 RR#'s be in 1950. This issue is another reason why I am looking at City Directories and Phone Book records that Ancestry has. I didn't use City Directories until 1940, but now that record collection are a must look at record group.

In a word, NO, to bulk adding Citations. One at a time. ONE FACT at a time. Add the Citations as you Add Facts. There is a Quick and easy way to do that.
