Hi Russ.

Hi Russ.  Thanks for pointing me to the video's about Hangouts.  I've watched them and I'm still confused.  I understand the big picture but I'm having trouble with specific functionality and I'm hoping you can help me.  Let me explain my objectives and you can let me know if you can be my muse.

I am the First Vice-Regent of Roswell King DAR chapter, in Dunwoody, Georgia.  Our chapter is unique in a several ways and I'm trying to make a more cohesive group.  Our chapter meets on the third Tuesday of each month (except 3 months in the summer) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Our chapter is organized for working women.  Part of our membership are retired working women, the other part of our membership consists of working women.  My goal is to find a way to include both sides of working women.  Our retired members are advanced in age and are mostly unavailable for meetings.  Our working women wear many hats.  Their schedules are packed between work and family.  I believe HOA's will be an excellent way to bridge the gap between working and retired members.

To complicate matters, the women wanting to join our chapter are typically working professionals with limited time.  Our chapter Registrar is stepping down after 8 years and we have no one as a capable replacement.  I want to use HOA's as a way to communicate with our prospective members.  As with any lineage society, there are specific guidelines on how to fill out the application.  I want to be able to interact with one or more person's to guide them in the application process.  Additionally, I need to provide an avenue whereby others in my chapter can help.

Is there any way you and I could talk real time so you could walk me through the process of actually doing a HOA?  The video's provide some information but I'm missing a few key points.  I'd really appreciate your time and instruction - and so would our chapter!  Thanks -

Marsha

Best practice traveling to find location, places etc....

Best practice traveling to find location, places etc....

One reason I am fascinated about location based genealogy is my fascination of walking where my ancestors has been.

I have the last weeks done 3 tours and I have started to use a Spot device to track my trip every 20 minutes so that I afterwards can create a nice trip report with the route in it

In Swedish sample trip reports with tracks created with a spot
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2833697
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2825789
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2794576

The problem I feel as a newbie in geneaology is to prepare for the journey. How to do it in the best way?

I try to be exact in position of a fact if possible using GPS coordinates.

I have seen the possibility to create customized reports and filter on location which works but still it is difficult to find the places. I would like to have places of interest on a map...

As a "workaround" I have tested by hand to create customized Google maps and use my phone to find of what places is near me or how to navigate to a place  and that is a way forward but I would like to have this automated....

Sample Google map created by hand

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zoChSl5nxThM.k8hZw4JnpAe4

Question: Any best practice/advices on how to build your tree and how to easy find a way to visit places "in your tree"?

Sampel blogpost where I have documented the last trip with maps and GPS coordinates, youtube video and a podcast about a house where my fathers mother lived

http://minancestry.blogspot.se/2014/06/slaktforskartur-osterfarnebo.html

My dream is to have like a geocache app interface where you get a lost of find places near you location that belongs to your family tree,,,,,

I like FTM data model where you have source, citation and that you canlink a fact to more people.

I like FTM data model where you have source, citation and that you can link a fact to more people.

BUT http://youtu.be/ElrY5ALsx1Y?t=15m28s here Crista Cowen is resolving conflicts and then she use Excel to compare evidence against each other. I like the way she works BUT she is doing it outside FTM which I feel is a weakness of the user interface of FTM?!?!?

My question is: Do you use other tools than FTM to resolve conflicts or to get an overview. I looked briefly on Evidentia http://evidentiasoftware.com/what-is-evidentia/ and that sounds as a good approach to not be people centric.

Question: Do you feel of any limits with FTM regarding resolving conflicts? Have you tested evidentia or any other tool and can they live together with FTM

Russ a question about locations and FTM.

Russ a question about locations and FTM. I feel that you are a big fan of using good locations in your family tree which I also are. Feels like beeing able to visit a house someone has lived in gives an additional dimension.

I have FTM 2014 and try to use locations in the best way. But I am not a big fan of the windows client as I feel the user interface sometimes make it faster to work using the ancester.com web interface....:

What I think I have seen is that if I upload a tree from windows version of FTM where I have resolved all the locations and then download this tree to a new client it feels that I loose the resolved status of names ==> If I have a name then it is ok but if I have a description added to it (like name when the fact took place, more detailed name etc....) then I loose that the "first part" of the location is resolved.......

Question: Have you seen this and do you have a workaround....

I have an example under the title FTM problem on page

Update for a JOINer in a Hangout On Air

Google Hangouts Update: Wider Thumbnail Image for YOU
2 min Video: When you are on the inside of a Hangout Video Call or a Hangout on Air (HOA), you will now see a wider version of your own thumbnail image in the filmstrip. But only your thumbnail and only on the Inside of the Hangout Interface.

This change just happened on the 19th of June, 2014.

Check out this quick 2 minute video that shows the inside of a HOA broadcast. It helps you understand why the thumbnail change matters and you'll also get a quick view of another update that just happened called "Pinning". We used to call the same function "Blue Boxing" but now that the box around the thumbnail image is white, we likely will start calling it "pinning".

I've got another video in the works to go into further detail on how pinning works for Hangouts and HOA (Hangouts on Air).

Are you trying to stay up-to-date with all the changes we see with the Hangouts tool set? A great place to do that and get more of the back story on the changes is the Hangout Mastery membership area. Signup to keep up here www.bit.ly/HangoutMastery

UPDATE on DDoS attack: (Saturday, June 21, 12pm ET) We are aware of some connectivity issues with the Mac version of Family Tree Maker and our team is actively addressing it.

We are also aware of problems with downloading GEDCOM files from Ancestry and Mundia, and our team is working on this as well.

MyCanvas, MyFamily, Rootsweb and the keying tool on AWAP are still not available. Unfortunately, we do not have an ETA on these, but will continue to post updates as they are made available.

As mentioned there will be some intermittent slowdowns and outages as we work through the recovery from the DDoS attack. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through these issues.

Ancestry.com and FTM2014

18 June 2014 at 11:54 am Eastern

From the best that I can tell, Ancestry.com is still having issues. From what I can tell, FTM2014, specifically, and probably other versions are impacted. You will see, or at least I am seeing, that I have No Internet Connection.

The folks at Family Tree Maker are aware of this issue and are working on it.

A blog reader asked what should be linked to a record, such as a Census Record. This short video will try to explain that a Media File, like a Census Record is linked to a Citation. I think of the Media file or image as supporting information for the Citation. That Citation is then linked to ALL of the Facts, or information that I gathered from that Citation.

I have a surname question.

I have a surname question. To try and find more information about my family, I am researching all siblings and children of direct descendants. I have come across a 2nd Great Grand Uncle who was born with the surname Mathews and his headstone has Matthews. All of his children seem to have taken the double t spelling. Do I correct to birth spelling or let it change to what was at death? I haven't gotten actual vital records (as this is a 2nd great grand) but am using census records and as I said his headstone. Is there a "rule" about this situation? Thank you for any help. ~ Michelle

I have a question about FTM14. I have trees on Ancestry.com and I take advantage of the hints. I add the hints to my tree. When I download a gedcom file to import into RootsMagic the media and the source is lost. In reading your's and Randy's post about multiple trees on multiple web web sites, I have the impression if I sync my Ancestry.com trees to FTM14 the source and a copy of the document would be in the FTM14  file.

If this were true, I could then import the FTM file into RootsMagic and I would have the source and document in RootsMagic. Is this true or is it wishful thinking?

Thanks
Ray
