QUESTION of the Day #2

QUESTION of the Day #2

If you were to find an Online Tree that is Messy, that is many Alternate Facts or Events, what is your Reaction as a Viewer, AND as a Collaborator?

In this case, there are 7 Birth Facts. Each has at least one Citation. One is my preferred Fact, the other 6 are the Alt Facts.

What is your reaction to this as a Viewer and/or a Collaborator ?

QUESTION of the Day #1:

QUESTION of the Day #1:

If you were to find an Online Tree that is clean, no Alternate Facts, what is your Reaction as a Viewer, AND as a Collaborator?

Clicking on any of the Facts / Events will show you the Sources of the data. Clicking on any of the Citations will show what Facts / Events came from that Source.

Hi Russ

Hi Russ,
As a relatively new user of FTM2014, I appreciate your “this is how I do it” tips – they have been very helpful in getting me up to speed.

I have a question that I have not seen addressed by you: how to you handle pre-1850 US Census records? I am not so much concerned about the citation as I am in how you handle the dreaded tick marks. In my mind there are two different scenarios: those cases where I believe that I have sufficient evidence to identify the person(s) enumerated within particular categories and those cases where I am not as sure.

How do you handle these cases? Do you create events for the people that you are confident of?

Thanks!
Tom Phelps

Your Questions are Welcome on the Use of the Family Tree Maker program.

This is a User Community, those of us who use the Family Tree Maker programs.

When asking questions:

What version of Family Tree Maker are you using AND what version of Windows?

What Workspace are your questions about.?

Please do NOT use Short Cuts in terms. Use terms from the program itself. There is NO FTM14. The Help Menu will give you the information you need.

Now here's an interesting interaction I had with the friendly folks atAncestry.

Now here's an interesting interaction I had with the friendly folks at Ancestry.com tech support. I've always had good luck with them. They answer within a reasonable amount of time and are consistent with their friendly, knowledgeable assistance. Until yesterday. Don't get me wrong, they were responsive but I managed to stump them.

It began with my Chapin family project. Someone asked to join my "Descendants of Deacon Samuel Chapin" Facebook page and I always check to make sure they are, in fact, a descendant of the Good Deacon.

When I tried to double check whether the Deacon was my own 8th or 9th great grandfather, I discovered, much to my surprise, that he was a 6th cousin 4 times removed of the wife of.....and on and on.

Curious to see how that happened literally overnight, I checked my FTM database and there he was correctly indicated as the 9th great grandfather as he should be. What happened between the last sync and the thousands of sync's I had done in the past.

Ancestry.com, I found out, doesn't have a category for "divorced" as FTM does. In a tree that I've had running for 16 or 17 years, suddenly I could only indicate "other." Since I've been a member since 31 Dec 1899 according to my profile (really...check yours out, too!) I can't believe that I missed this. So, I changed the status of my first wife from whom I was divorced in the mid-90's to "Other." Then the relationships that had been correct for the past 16 or 17 years suddenly fell into place

Two things: 1) Ancestry doesn't know why the relationships suddenly went berserk and 2) the tech support person who was assisting agreed completely that there should be a "Divorced" option in the relationship drop-down menu. After all, I told her, it's not a new concept! She said she'd put it into customer feedback/suggestions or something like that... We'll see what happens. At least I know that I am still the 9th great grandson of Deacon Samuel Chapin (1598-1675) and I can continue to be a member of my own Facebook page!

Hey Russ

Hey Russ,

I've been away from my research for a while. I use FTM2014. I've always found it faster to research my Ancestry leaf hints using the online Ancestry program rather than launching the browser within FTM, then syncing periodically. I attach it to my person or put it in my shoebox if I'm not sure. I also save a copy of all records to my computer for later reference. However, now with the new online setup for hints, it requires you to commit to Yes, No, or Maybe--it doesn't have the Save function to put it in the shoebox. Any tips or tricks for making this easier? Sometimes I like to take time later to sort through my shoebox without having to remember which people have "maybe" hints.

Maybe I'm just not getting the new online functions. ???

Thanks
Michelle

FYI - an Update on the RootsWeb website.

FYI - an Update on the RootsWeb website.

I 2nd everything that DearMYRTLE has said about backing up. I run BackBlaze, have a Network Back Up Drive and another USB External Drive for my Genealogy Database.

The KEY for me, is not just Backing Up, BUT to Restore a file or two every once in a while.

Reason: Stuff Breaks. I have an External Drive of Back Ups fail. That was several years worth of Back Ups, but it still failed. I can NOT communicate with that Drive. But it's only a Back Up drive you say .... I had at least two cases, where I needed two of those Back Ups and couldn't access them. They were historical, but I needed them none the less.

Ol' Myrt here is frankly surprised RootsWeb's parent company, Ancestry.com, didn't have a redundancy system in place to ensure a swift recovery when one component of their datacenter fails. That's WHEN not IF hardware fails. Providing for that eventuality is standard operating procedure if the datacenter values it's content. Maybe RootsWeb content isn't valued by Ancestry.com?

Russ

Russ,
I purchased a new computer recently and want to transfer my FTM2014 database to the new box, but I don't have a serial number to type in to install the software. I do have my orginial downloaded file and the update that was also sent out last year, but it won't install without a serial number. I haven't been able to find what the orginial serial number was when I installed it.

I did email Ancestry support and they responded that I only had 30 days after purchase to put another copy on a second computer, but at the time of purchase, about 2 years ago, I had only one computer.

When you transferred your data to a new computer, did you have to buy a new copy of FTM2014? I vaguely remember you talked about it in one of the HOA's, but have not had luck finding that video.

Do you have any suggestions for me? It sounds like I will need to buy a new copy to put on my new computer as that box will become my main machine for genealogy research.

BTW, I appreciate your recent hangouts on FTM. Very nice hints to make our work more efficient. Thank You!!
Susan

Did anyone else just lose all their trees in FTM2014?

Did anyone else just lose all their trees in FTM2014? I opened my FTM this morning and ALL of my trees are gone! When I go to 'select tree' there is nothing there. When I go to 'download a tree from Ancestry' my ancestry trees show up as being already linked. So, I can unlink/link those again if I need to (shesh!) - but I can't figure out where my non-Ancestry trees went! Was it just me? (Oh, btw, my Legacy tree is missing too ... but that was just a test tree, not one I cared about)

So, FTM will discontinue syncing trees at the end of 2016.

So, FTM will discontinue syncing trees at the end of 2016. My question is about whether the shaky leaves in my FTM 3 Mac will continue to work and provide Web Merge data. Will we still be able to merge data directly into FTM from Ancestry.com? That feature is a very valuable feature to me and the main reason I use FTM and have an Ancestry membership. I would assume so, but you know what they say about assuming...
