Did anyone else just lose all their trees in FTM2014?

Did anyone else just lose all their trees in FTM2014? I opened my FTM this morning and ALL of my trees are gone! When I go to 'select tree' there is nothing there. When I go to 'download a tree from Ancestry' my ancestry trees show up as being already linked. So, I can unlink/link those again if I need to (shesh!) - but I can't figure out where my non-Ancestry trees went! Was it just me? (Oh, btw, my Legacy tree is missing too ... but that was just a test tree, not one I cared about)

  4. I noticed I had a windows update last night -- can you find your Family Tree file folder?

  5. Not sure what to look for or where - I found a back up for ONE of my trees from 3/14, but can't seem to find anything else. I am extremely computer ignorant. :(

  6. Just try to search in your search box   -- are you using Windows?

  7. Yes. when I type in 'Family Tree Maker' all sorts of things show up

  8. try typing in *.ftm     and then your trees "should" be found   the *  is a wild card.    Be sure to use the dot before the ftm

  9. YES! there they are! Now why aren't they in the FTM program any longer? And how do I put them back?

  10. OK, I just restored one. I guess I'm going to have to manually restore them all - I wonder what happened?

Did you have a Windows update Recently ? Have you been having computer issues ? Do you have a Utility that "tunes" you computer?

What happens when you click on File, Open ??

It should show you a list of all FTM files in the c://User/ [ username ]\Documents\Family Tree Maker\ folder

Do you manually back up your file on a regular basis ??

Do you Back Up your file on an external drive or "in the cloud" ?

  12. Same issue happened to me about month ago. A Russ said you could, as I did, try use File/Open option in FTM 2014 and then browse to your FTM file folder where your FTM tree are stored on your computer. After wworking with file, it is recommended to use Tools/Compact file option so program can resolve possible issues of your tree.

It resolves by itself. After next start of FTM all of my FTM trees are there.

  14. Russ Worthington  I am always getting windows updates - I don't recall one the night before last. I have not been having computer issues. I do not have a utility that tunes the computer.
File, Open show some of my trees, but not all of them. I found more doing the *.ftm search of the whole computer.
I just backed up on the 14th
I back up on both an external and the "cloud"
I think I am going to have to restore the files from the windows search OR unlink/download again from Ancestry.

  15. Fr. Ivan Delic what does compacting the files do? It looks scary...

  16. Russ Worthington Oh, wait - there were updates to Office 2010 on the night of the 15th. On the 10th there was an entire system update - but everything was fine after that one.... Oh, and I DO have a 'tune up" feature on Norton - it removed "unnecessary windows file clutter" yesterday - whatever that means.

Sounds like you have a computer or software issue and NOT a Family Tree Maker issue.

When you clicked on File, Open, What Folder did it open ?

  18. Russ Worthington the family tree maker folder - just like you gave an example of above. Should I just open from there and then see what is missing? when I do a *.ftm in the windows search there are more files - maybe some of them are just back-up copies?

  19. Russ Worthington Actually - the files that show up when I click File, Open are all dated from 12/29/14!? When I do the *.ftm in the windows search the files from the 3/14/16 back up show up ....

I have no clue what you did on your computer. Sounds like you moved your files to another folder. Just locate that folder withe the 2016 files and Copy those files to where they belong.

Sounds like you have your Family Tree Maker in at least two different Folders

  21. Russ Worthington Yes! That is exactly what I did! I've never been very techy (and this situation is techy to me) - thanks.
