QUESTION of the Day #1:
QUESTION of the Day #1:
If you were to find an Online Tree that is clean, no Alternate Facts, what is your Reaction as a Viewer, AND as a Collaborator?
Clicking on any of the Facts / Events will show you the Sources of the data. Clicking on any of the Citations will show what Facts / Events came from that Source.
Did they record the exact same details in every source for that person!!
ReplyDeleteHilary Gadsby - No, to answer your question clearly. The purpose of a "Clean Tree" is NO ALT or Multiple use of Any Fact or Event. If the viewer would to go to the Source, they would see what the source claims were, but the owner of the tree is presenting their conclusion at this point in time, or my term "Current Thinking".
ReplyDeleteI have heard the term "Conclusion based" genealogy programs, and I think this is what the Clean Tree is about.
Crista Cowan has a Video where she talks about this

Hope that helps,
Russ
Hilary Gadsby - I have a live "Clean Tree" and am working on another, more complete one. I can invite you to it, if you let me know what your Ancestry username is. --- Thanks
ReplyDeleteIf you were to find an Online Tree that is clean, no Alternate Facts, what is your Reaction as a Viewer ...
ReplyDeleteI would be suspicious. That would be my reaction.
In my experience it is common to find conflicting records for any given person.
The past is more ambiguous, the data more noisy if you may, than what a "clean" tree may convey to me as a viewer.
I would rather see a noisy profile in a tree, and then someone's written conclusion in an attached story or comment field.
Dan Edwards
ReplyDeleteSo, Your preference would be what II am calling a Messy Tree. I'll post about that a little later.
Thank you,
Russ

ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a video that got this conversation going.

Oh, and Dan Edwards - This is a fully documented tree. Every FACT / Event has at least one Citation and the Viewer can get to it in the Ancestry Member Tree
ReplyDeleteRuss Worthington I'd still be suspicious.
ReplyDeleteI have found on many occasions where some aspect of a person - a name, a date, a relationship, is multiply attested but with conflicting information.
Censuses in particular are noisy, but other source types are too.
Rather than reject ambiguity, I'd rather see the ambiguousness/conflict recorded, and then read someone's conclusions/thoughts on what this conflicting information may mean.
If I see only a "clean" tree, and then go searching through the records myself and find some alternate "fact" that is not in the clean tree, I may wonder why the clean tree maker missed this discovery. Did they not do an exhaustive search? Did they reject this particular record, and if so, why?
Dan Edwards
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments. I appreciate them.
Russ
Russ Worthington So you are saying that a clean tree is all about the conclusions that the researcher has reached based on the current evidence. Each should have a discussion attached to them be it just the single sentence that the sources all agree. It should be clear why the researcher has reached the conclusion.
ReplyDeleteHilary Gadsby
ReplyDeleteDid you get a chance to watch the Video by Crista Cowan ?
The answer, I think, is yes. But, there is a limitation in the Online Tree. How to reflect how I reached that conclusion.
I am finishing up a 1,602 person "Clean Tree", that I will invite those interested to see, what I understand to be a "Clean Tree".
This whole discussion about "Clean Trees" is not one I have heard about before, until I was in a discussion on a We're Related Project I am working on. I was reminded of Cristas' Video and am trying to make sure I understand what a Clean Tree is and what it might look like.
I will have a couple of other questions, about other options on this topic.
Thank you,
Russ
I am not sure I have seen a clean tree. I will go back and watch Crista's video.
ReplyDeleteShelley Murphy - My earlier question showed a screen capture of one. I have now uploaded a new "Clean Tree" based on the Messy We're Related Ancestry Member Tree
