Hey Russ

Hey Russ,

I've been away from my research for a while. I use FTM2014. I've always found it faster to research my Ancestry leaf hints using the online Ancestry program rather than launching the browser within FTM, then syncing periodically. I attach it to my person or put it in my shoebox if I'm not sure. I also save a copy of all records to my computer for later reference. However, now with the new online setup for hints, it requires you to commit to Yes, No, or Maybe--it doesn't have the Save function to put it in the shoebox. Any tips or tricks for making this easier? Sometimes I like to take time later to sort through my shoebox without having to remember which people have "maybe" hints.

Maybe I'm just not getting the new online functions. ???

Thanks
Michelle

  1. Michelle,
I have used two different ways to work around Ancestry's Yes, No, Maybe choices for saving the image of the record I am looking at to my computer.

My first way: Once you find a record via a hint from Ancestry, remember what that record is. Let’s say the record hint is for the 1870 Census. Open a new window in your browser, open ancestry, choose Search from the menu bar, select the 1870 US Federal Census, and then type in the name of the person you are currently working on. By searching only the 1870 census, the result list should be very short. Select the correct name and open the image. The Save button will be where it’s supposed to be and you can choose to save the image to either the computer or the shoebox.

My second, less preferred, way is to choose Yes to the hint, save the image to my tree, go back to the profile of the person, and go back to the Facts page. I can then view the image from list of the sources. Choose View Image, not View Record. There you will see the Save button that we both miss seeing in this new version of Ancestry. Click on the down arrow next to the word Save and you will get a choice of saving the image of the record to your computer or the shoebox.

Downside of this method is that the record might not be the correct record for your person and you will have to remove it. I think that this method is risky, as you do not want anything in your tree that has not been proven to meet the GPS.

My method of saving images results in having two copies of the record on my computer. One image is in my Google Drive (cloud and on the C drive, syncing) filed by Surname. The other copy is on my C drive where FTM2014 automatically puts it. I am trying to do more web searching and through FTM. Since my database is small by most standards, I am leaving both copies in place.

Just my opinion. Your milage may vary. I really miss that Save button—it causes me extra work.

  2. Susan,

I must be missing something about "really miss that Save button". It's there. VIEW the Image. On the Right is a Tools ICON which has the Download option there.

My image is actually 4 places. 1) In FTM2014, 2) in the Ancestry Member Tree, 3) Backed up on an External Drive using the Compact, Back Up command in FTM2014, and 4) my C Drive is automatically backed up in the cload.

ONE Web Merge does the trick

  3. Thank you! Missed that entirely. Glad that you have our backs.
