I don't. I've been giving it some thought but haven't yet decided if or how. Legacy does have that capability and/or I'm competent enough with Excel to do it there. In the early days of my researching, I generally found basic documents [census, WWI draft registrations, marriage registers, etc.] before I moved to another family unit. Now I'm at the point of seeing what else is available and following up with new image collections that are being added to, so it has become more pertinent to have a log of where I've searched and when and what I've found so I can schedule return visits. Because my database is quite large, I suspect utilizing the database's research log capability makes more sense.
What time Russ Worthington for Wednesday with DearMYRTLE cousin? and I will see if I can join, time difference allowing. Otherwise I can certainly share some details with you.
I hadn't really, BUT, I actually had been by the way I entered data in notes. Now that I have research log capability in my software, I am keeping one.
Looking forward to see what Julie Goucher shares with us. Wacky Wednesday will probably have more when working with EXCEL, Google Sheets, and Hilary Gadsby is talking about using Family Historian.
When I was cleaning up my database, I discovered that I did have material in my notes that help with a research log, so I just started to use it and it is very helpful. BUT my ToDo list keeps growing. Reminding me to go back to that document or source.
OK! - Let me see what I can pull together and I will see what the time is here! I may blog and share the link - either way I will add something to the thread here.
Julie Goucher I had been going to do something on Google Sheets for my new community mirroring what is being done on the Wacky Wednesday hangout but not live. If you get something together before me let me know as I do not want to duplicate anything.
I think the thing to remember is that our research logs can be as individual as we are; they need to meet our individual needs. I have a to do list as a separate sheet.
In the last month I have tried to keep a research log and did well for a week. I put it in evernote because I could access it anywhere. But, alas: I did not put in my research for the last 5 days. So what good was it!
Kim Hanks It took a me a little while to get use to keeping a research log and now I cannot do any research without it. Evernote is always open. I have two monitors so Evernote is open on one with Legacy open as well and then on the 2nd monitor is my web browser with various tabs open.
I use the research log in RootsMagic, but I've been trying out Evernote for it to. I love the RM log, but it drives me crazy that it can't be open at the same time I'm working on the people.
I do have a research log - It started in 1988 being kept in a small notebook, it now resides as a spreadsheet in Google Drive.

ReplyDeleteI like this. You might want to join +DearMYRTLE's very distant cousin on Wacky Wednesday and talk about your Research Log as a Sheet on Google Drive.
Awesome and Thank you,
Russ

ReplyDeleteThank you.
Great use of Evernote.
I use Evernote as well, but as a supplement or where I need to look.
Thanks again,
Russ

ReplyDeleteKim Hanks Evernote is a good program to have around, just for this purpose.

ReplyDeleteRuss Worthington WOW! thanks for pointing that out
